You can never enjoy any pinoy dramas or movies without knowing the common terms or slang!
Here are some of the terms / slang commonly used in our dramas/movies:
Terms (Honorifics | Title | Name)
- Nanay - mom or mommy. Nanay is considered as more endearing compared to Mama, Mom or Mommy.
- Tatay - dad or daddy. Tatay is also considered as more endearing compared to Papa. Dad or Daddy.
- Inang - or Inay which means Mother. An affectionate term is commonly used by Filipinos living in the rural areas or provinces.
- Itang - or Itay mean Father. This term is also commonly used in rural areas or provinces.
- Ama - means father. Ex. He is my father, is translated as Siya ang aking ama. This can also be used to address to one's father.
- Ina - means father.
- Kuya - older brother or an older male. Commonly used to address elder male siblings. It is also used to non-blood related older male as a sign of respect.
- Ate - older sister or an volder female. A counterpart of Kuya.
- Lola - means grandmother.
- Lolo - means grandfather.
- Ninang - a term used to address to your godmother.
- Ninong - equivalent for Ninang.
- Tiyahin - or Tiya - Aunt
- Tiyuhin - or Tiyo - Uncle
- Tita - common term to address an Aunt. It is also a common title used to address a friend's mother or an older female relative.
- Tito - common term to address an Uncle.
- Manong - or Manoy is a term used to address to the first male born for Visayas region Filipinos. It is also commonly used to addressed a middle-aged man, either blood related or stranger.
- Manang - a female counterpart of Manong. As the term Manang gives the impression of "Old woman" as it's translated as older woman, many older females prefers to be addressed as Ate or Miss.
- Sis - short for sister - is a term used to a closed female friend. It is sometimes used to address a female stranger.
- Bro | Brod - short of brother. A male counterpart of Sis.
- Mare - short for Kumare. It's a term used to those who stood as godmother to one's child.
- Pare - short for Kumpare. A term used for male friends who stood as a child's godfather. It is also randomly being used to friendly term to address to a male friend.
- Nene - title used to address to little or young girls.
- Toto - term used for little or young boys.
- Pamangkin - is a newpew or neice.
- Bunso - youngest of the family or of a group
NOTE: As Filipinos greatly values respect for elders by using proper honorifics, we also use professional honorifics when addressing to others as we acknowledged their profession and one's hard work to achieve its title.
Ex. Naipanalo si Atty. Martinez ang kaso laban sa illegal na droga.
Atty. Martinez won the case against illegal drugs.
Ex. Maganda ang disenyong gawa ni Architect Flores.
